Short answer

Spotting after sex at 6 weeks can come from a sensitive cervix, but pregnancy bleeding still warrants clinical advice.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Possible source
Sensitive cervical tissue may bleed after contact
Until assessed
Pause penetration while bleeding is active
Report
Pain, dizziness, fever, discharge and changing blood flow

The short answer

Light contact bleeding may settle, yet its timing after sex does not prove that intercourse caused it or rule out another early-pregnancy concern.

Why bleeding may follow sex

Pregnancy increases blood flow to the cervix, and friction can make delicate surface tissue bleed. Cervical inflammation, a cervical polyp or an infection can also cause contact bleeding. Other causes of early-pregnancy bleeding, including pregnancy loss and ectopic pregnancy, may happen around the same time by coincidence.

Blood colour and quantity offer useful context but cannot establish the diagnosis. A healthcare professional may consider an examination, infection testing, blood tests or an ultrasound according to the full symptom pattern.

Practical next steps

Pause penetrative sex until the spotting has stopped and you have received advice, particularly if it recurs after contact. Note when it began, whether it is only visible when wiping or reaches a pad, and whether there is pelvic pain, cramping, dizziness, fever, discharge or urinary discomfort.

Call your maternity care provider or early-pregnancy service. Mention recent sex without assuming it explains everything, and share any history of ectopic pregnancy, fertility treatment, cervical procedures or sexually transmitted infection exposure.

Signs that need urgent assessment

Attend emergency care for heavy bleeding, worsening pelvic or abdominal pain, one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, severe dizziness, weakness or a sudden sense that you are very unwell. Urgency is based on these warning signs, regardless of whether bleeding began after sex.

Arrange prompt review for bleeding that continues or repeatedly returns, or for fever, unpleasant-smelling discharge, pain during sex or pain when passing urine, because examination or infection testing may be needed.

What to clarify at your appointment

You can ask whether a cervical examination is appropriate, whether you need swabs or urine testing, and whether your pregnancy should be checked by ultrasound or blood tests. Also ask when sexual activity can resume and which change in bleeding or pain should send you directly to emergency care.

Questions people ask

Does sex cause miscarriage?

Sex in an uncomplicated pregnancy does not itself indicate that a miscarriage is occurring. However, bleeding can have several causes, so contact your maternity team for advice based on your symptoms.

Why might the blood look pink or brown?

A small amount of fresh blood mixed with vaginal fluid may look pink, while blood that leaves more slowly may look brown. Colour alone cannot determine whether the pregnancy is healthy.
