Understanding a missed miscarriage at six weeks

An early scan may be inconclusive if dates are uncertain or development is too early to assess clearly. The care team may repeat an ultrasound or pregnancy-hormone blood tests before making a diagnosis. Pregnancy symptoms can continue for a while and do not prove that the pregnancy is developing.

Clinicians compare ultrasound findings with the expected pregnancy stage and may allow time for a repeat scan when there is uncertainty. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, options can include waiting for the pregnancy tissue to pass, using medicine to help the womb empty, or having a procedure.

The suitable choice depends on symptoms, scan findings, medical history, preference and access to follow-up. Your team should explain what bleeding and pain to expect, how completion will be checked, and whom to contact if the process does not start or finish as anticipated.

Attend the recommended repeat scan or blood test and avoid making treatment decisions from a single uncertain early result. If the diagnosis is confirmed, discuss the benefits and burdens of each approach, including predictability, pain relief, follow-up and the possibility that another method may later be needed.

Use pads rather than internal menstrual products while bleeding so you can observe the flow. Emotional responses vary widely; consider asking for bereavement support, counselling or time to talk through what happened. A miscarriage is not caused by ordinary movement, work or a moment of stress.

Contact the care team for increasing pain, bleeding that is becoming difficult to manage, fever, chills, offensive discharge, or uncertainty about whether tissue has passed. These symptoms can require examination, blood tests or an ultrasound.

Go to urgent or emergency care for very heavy bleeding, fainting, severe weakness, severe abdominal pain, one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain or difficulty breathing. Early pregnancy pain and collapse must be assessed promptly because a pregnancy outside the womb can cause internal bleeding.
