Indigestion at 5 weeks pregnant

Short answer
Indigestion at 5 weeks pregnant may settle with smaller meals and trigger avoidance, but severe or persistent pain needs assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Indigestion may feel like
- Upper abdominal discomfort, bloating, belching or becoming full quickly.
- Track
- Location, meal timing, personal food triggers and accompanying symptoms.
- Medication
- Confirm that the exact product and dose are suitable during pregnancy.
The short answer
Speak with a pharmacist, GP or maternity clinician before using indigestion medicine, including products bought without a prescription. Get urgent care for intense or worsening abdominal pain, chest pressure, fainting, blood in vomit, black stools, persistent vomiting, or one-sided pelvic pain with bleeding or dizziness.
Recognising indigestion
Indigestion, also called dyspepsia, describes upper abdominal fullness, discomfort, bloating, early fullness during a meal, belching or nausea. Heartburn is a burning sensation rising behind the breastbone and may overlap with indigestion, but the terms do not describe exactly the same experience.
Hormonal changes can alter digestion early in pregnancy, while nausea may change how and when you eat. Acid reflux often presents with burning or sour fluid reaching the throat. Gastritis can present with upper abdominal pain or nausea. Symptoms alone cannot reliably identify the underlying cause.
Meal and routine adjustments
Choose smaller meals and snacks, chew slowly and stop before feeling overfull. Keep a simple note of foods that reliably provoke discomfort rather than excluding many foods at once. Greasy, rich, spicy or acidic meals and caffeinated drinks are triggers for some people, but individual patterns differ.
Remain upright after eating and avoid a large meal shortly before bed. Sip fluids regularly if nausea makes drinking difficult. Check medicine labels and ask about interactions with prenatal vitamins or iron. Do not use herbal digestive remedies, bicarbonate mixtures or another person's prescription medicine without professional guidance.
Warning signs that change the plan
Arrange review when discomfort keeps returning, interferes with food or fluids, wakes you repeatedly, or occurs with painful swallowing, food sticking, fever, ongoing diarrhoea, repeated vomiting or unexplained weight loss. A clinician can consider digestive causes and select treatment that fits pregnancy.
Seek immediate help for crushing or heavy chest discomfort, breathlessness, collapse, vomit containing blood, black tar-like stool, a hard swollen abdomen, or severe pain that does not ease. At this stage of pregnancy, one-sided lower abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, faintness or bleeding requires urgent pregnancy assessment rather than treatment as indigestion.
Preparing for a consultation
Ask whether the symptom location suggests reflux or another problem, which medicine is compatible with pregnancy, and how it should be spaced from supplements. Be ready to describe the pain precisely, its timing around meals, bowel changes, vomiting, vaginal bleeding and every medicine or remedy already taken.

Questions people ask
Is indigestion the same as morning sickness?
No. They can overlap, but indigestion centres on upper abdominal discomfort, fullness, bloating or belching, whereas pregnancy nausea may occur without those features.
Can I use my usual indigestion medicine?
Check the exact product with a pharmacist or clinician first. Ingredients vary, pregnancy may change the preferred option, and some products interfere with supplements or other medicines.
Could lower abdominal pain be indigestion?
Indigestion generally affects the upper abdomen. New one-sided lower abdominal or pelvic pain in early pregnancy, particularly with bleeding, shoulder-tip pain or faintness, needs urgent assessment.
