Frequent sneezing in a four-month-old baby

Look at your baby's breathing, feeding, alertness and wet nappies rather than counting sneezes alone. Sneezing with no other change can be observed, while new congestion or cough may fit with a respiratory infection.

Sneezing is a reflex that removes mucus and particles from the nose. Dry air, perfume, smoke, dust or milk that reaches the nasal area after a feed can trigger it. A common cold can present with sneezing alongside a blocked or runny nose, cough or a change in feeding.

Allergic rhinitis can present with repeated sneezing, clear nasal discharge and itchy or watery eyes, although infection and irritation also produce nasal symptoms. The pattern, exposures and accompanying signs help a clinician distinguish among them.

Keep the baby away from tobacco smoke, vaping aerosols, incense, strong fragrances and dusty air. If the nose seems blocked, plain saline drops intended for babies may loosen mucus; gentle suction can be used sparingly before a feed if needed. Continue usual milk feeds and offer them more patiently if congestion interrupts sucking.

Do not give cough, cold or allergy medicine unless a clinician specifically recommends it for your baby. Avoid putting essential oils or medicated rubs in or under the nose. For sleep, place the baby flat on their back on a firm, clear sleep surface rather than propping up the mattress.

Get urgent help if the baby struggles for breath, breathes with marked pulling in under the ribs, has pauses in breathing, develops blue or grey lips, cannot feed because of breathlessness, is difficult to wake, has a seizure or has far fewer wet nappies.

Contact a clinician promptly for fever, worsening cough, persistent vomiting, feeding much less than usual, symptoms that are getting worse, or if your baby seems unwell even without a clear warning sign. Young babies can change quickly, so caregiver concern is a valid reason to seek assessment.

Describe when the sneezing began, whether it follows feeds or a particular exposure, and whether there is congestion, discharge, cough, fever or eye irritation. Ask how to use saline and suction safely, which changes in feeding or wet nappies matter, and whether anyone at home should change smoking, fragrance or pet routines.
