What should you know about a 3 mm nodule on the lung?

The report alone cannot establish its cause. Clinicians consider its appearance, whether it was present on an older scan, and personal factors such as age, smoking history, previous cancer, immune health, and relevant exposures.

A lung nodule is a small, rounded area that appears different from surrounding lung on imaging. Causes include healed infection, inflammation, scar tissue, and less commonly an early tumour. Its edge, density, position, and any calcification add meaning to the measured diameter.

At this size, a nodule may be too small for reliable sampling or metabolic imaging. Tiny differences between reports can also reflect scan technique or how the measurement was made, so comparison with the actual earlier images is particularly useful.

Read the impression section of the radiology report and check whether it recommends comparison or another CT scan. Obtain previous chest imaging from other facilities if available. A clinician can then decide whether no dedicated follow-up, a later low-dose CT, or a different assessment fits your circumstances.

Do not arrange a biopsy solely because the word nodule appears. For a 3 mm target, the possible harm and low chance of obtaining a useful sample may outweigh the benefit. People with a known cancer or weakened immune system often need a plan tailored outside routine incidental-nodule pathways.

A tiny nodule itself commonly causes no symptoms. Arrange prompt assessment for coughing up blood, a persistent or worsening cough, unexplained weight loss, fever that does not settle, or increasing breathlessness. These symptoms have many possible causes and deserve evaluation independent of the nodule's size.

Call emergency services for severe trouble breathing, blue or grey lips, fainting, sudden chest pain, or heavy bleeding from the airway. Urgency comes from the symptom, not from whether a small nodule was described as common or uncommon.

Ask whether the nodule is solid or subsolid, whether older scans show stability, and which personal risk factors matter in your case. Confirm the recommended imaging interval, the scan type, who will review the result, and what change would prompt specialist referral.
