What to know about stage 3C ovarian cancer

Care commonly combines surgery with chemotherapy. The order and details depend on where the cancer is, whether an operation can remove most visible disease, your overall health and the tumour's biological features.

This is an advanced stage of ovarian, fallopian tube or primary peritoneal cancer. It describes cancer deposits on the lining of the abdomen beyond the pelvis, and nearby lymph nodes may also be involved. Disease on the outer surface of the liver or spleen can fit this stage; cancer growing inside those organs is classified differently.

Stage describes where cancer is found, not exactly how one person will respond. The pathology type, tumour biology, amount of disease left after surgery and response to medicines all shape the treatment plan.

A gynaecological oncology team reviews imaging, tissue results, blood tests, symptoms and fitness for surgery. Some people have debulking surgery first and chemotherapy afterwards. Others begin chemotherapy, are reassessed, and have surgery during the treatment course if that approach is more suitable.

Ask whether inherited genetic testing and tumour profiling could guide maintenance treatment or inform relatives. Support for pain, nausea, appetite, bowel problems, fluid in the abdomen and emotional strain can begin alongside cancer-directed treatment.

Contact the oncology team promptly for a new swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, worsening pain, reduced urine, or no bowel movement with increasing cramps. These symptoms can signal dehydration, bowel blockage or pressure from abdominal fluid.

Seek emergency care for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, confusion, uncontrolled bleeding, or a painful swollen leg. During chemotherapy, fever or shaking chills require immediate advice using the emergency number supplied by the treatment team.

Ask what the scans and biopsy show, whether treatment should begin with surgery or chemotherapy, and what the aim of each treatment is. It is also useful to discuss how response will be checked, which side effects need a same-day call, whether genetic results could change treatment, and who to contact outside clinic hours.
