A 38 Celsius fever explained

Many short-lived infections cause this temperature. A person who is drinking, breathing comfortably and responding normally can often be watched at home, while concerning symptoms require care regardless of whether the reading rises further.

The temperature confirms fever but cannot show which illness is responsible or how serious it is. Common cold and chickenpox may present with fever, while bronchiolitis or croup can include fever alongside distinctive breathing symptoms, especially in children.

Measurement method affects interpretation. Use the thermometer as directed, note where the reading was taken and repeat it after the person has rested if they were recently active, wrapped in blankets or in a hot environment. Do not rely on touching the forehead alone.

Offer small drinks often and watch for a moist mouth, tears in a child and regular urination. Keep the room comfortable and remove excess layers without making the person cold. Rest is helpful, although quiet normal activity is acceptable if they feel able.

Paracetamol or ibuprofen can reduce aches when suitable for the individual. Use the correct formulation and label dose, and do not alternate medicines unless a clinician has explained a safe schedule. Aspirin should not be given to children for fever.

Call emergency services for struggling or paused breathing, a seizure, severe drowsiness, new confusion, blue or mottled skin, or a non-blanching rash. Prompt assessment is also needed for dehydration, persistent vomiting, severe headache with neck stiffness, intense localized pain or rapid deterioration.

Any fever at or above 38 degrees Celsius in a baby under three months needs urgent assessment. Contact a clinician sooner when the patient is pregnant, immunocompromised, medically fragile or has recently had a procedure. Ongoing or recurrent fever should be reviewed even without an emergency sign.

Tell the clinician about recent travel, sick contacts, new medicines, vaccination history when relevant, and any cough, rash, bowel change or urinary symptom. Useful questions include what cause is being considered, whether tests would alter treatment and how long to continue home monitoring.
