What happens at a 36-week growth scan?

Short answer
At 36 weeks, a growth scan assesses fetal measurements alongside position, amniotic fluid, and other signs of wellbeing.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

In brief
The report helps your maternity team decide whether usual follow-up remains suitable or whether you need extra monitoring. Measurements estimate size; they cannot state the baby's eventual birth weight with certainty.
What is assessed
Ultrasound measurements commonly cover the head, abdominal circumference, and femur in the thigh. These contribute to an estimated fetal weight. The sonographer also identifies whether the baby is head-down, breech, or lying another way and checks the fluid surrounding the baby.
Depending on why you were referred, Doppler ultrasound may assess blood flow through the umbilical cord or other vessels. A clinician considers this information with previous measurements, your blood pressure and health, the baby's movements, and any pregnancy complications.
Making sense of the result
Before leaving, find out whether the report will be reviewed that day and whether another appointment is booked. Keep monitoring the baby's usual movement pattern after a reassuring scan, because ultrasound findings do not replace your day-to-day awareness.
If growth appears slower or faster than expected, the next step is based on the whole assessment. The team may compare earlier images, arrange fetal heart-rate monitoring, repeat ultrasound, or discuss the timing and method of birth. Ask for the reason behind any recommendation.
Get assessed without delay
Call your maternity assessment service now if fetal movements lessen, stop, or feel different from the established pattern. Urgent advice is also needed for bleeding, suspected waters breaking, persistent severe abdominal pain, frequent painful contractions, a severe headache, visual disturbance, sudden facial or hand swelling, breathlessness, or feeling seriously unwell. Do not wait for the growth-scan appointment.
Points to clarify with the team
Request an explanation of the growth trend rather than only the estimated weight. Check the baby's position, fluid level, and whether Doppler was used; then ask what follow-up is planned and whether any finding affects your intended place, timing, or mode of birth.

Questions people ask
Does every pregnancy need a growth scan at 36 weeks?
No. The timing and need depend on local care pathways, examination findings, medical history, or concerns about growth and wellbeing.
Can a scan confirm whether I can have a vaginal birth?
The scan supplies useful information such as position and estimated size, but your team also considers your health, labour history, placenta, and other clinical findings.
Why might another scan be offered?
A repeat examination can show the direction of growth over time or recheck fluid and blood flow when one result needs follow-up.
