It may be offered because of a clinical concern, a difference in abdominal measurements, your medical or pregnancy history, or as part of a planned monitoring pathway. The reason for the scan shapes how its results are used.

Measurements of the head, abdominal circumference and thigh bone contribute to an estimated fetal weight. The result is plotted against the expected range for the pregnancy stage, while earlier measurements help show the direction of growth. Ultrasound estimation is not the same as weighing a newborn and has natural measurement variation.

The report may describe the baby's presentation, fluid around the baby and placental location. In some situations, blood-flow measurements are added. Your clinician combines all of this with fetal movements, blood pressure, symptoms and other antenatal findings before recommending next steps.

Check the clinic's preparation advice rather than assuming you need a full bladder. Take your maternity record and details of previous imaging if the service does not already have them. During the scan, the sonographer moves a probe over gel on your abdomen and may ask you to adjust position to obtain clearer views.

Make sure you know how and when results will reach your maternity clinician. Depending on the complete picture, the plan may involve routine care, another ultrasound, fetal monitoring or a discussion about the timing and place of birth. Keep every antenatal appointment unless your team changes the plan.

Call your maternity unit without delay for reduced or altered fetal movements. Urgent assessment is also needed for vaginal bleeding, suspected waters breaking, repeated painful contractions, severe or persistent abdominal pain, or a severe headache accompanied by vision changes or sudden swelling. A future scan appointment is not a reason to postpone help.

You could ask whether growth is following the previous pattern, whether blood-flow assessment was needed, and how the baby's position affects current planning. Clarify the purpose and timing of any repeat test, who to contact with concerns and whether the result changes your existing birth plan.
