Short answer

Heartburn at 33 weeks is often related to pregnancy hormones and pressure from the growing uterus, and meal or sleep-position changes may ease it.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical feeling
Burning behind the breastbone or a sour taste after meals
Helpful habit
Eat smaller meals and remain upright afterward
Medicine check
Confirm pregnancy suitability with a maternity clinician or pharmacist

The short answer

A burning feeling behind the breastbone, a sour taste, or fluid rising into the throat can fit heartburn. Symptoms commonly become more noticeable after eating, when bending, or while lying down.

Why heartburn can happen now

Pregnancy hormones can relax the muscular valve between the stomach and oesophagus. At the same time, the enlarged uterus can increase pressure on the stomach. These changes allow acidic stomach contents to travel upwards and irritate the oesophagus.

Heartburn itself does not harm the baby, but persistent symptoms can disrupt eating and sleep. Pain that feels unlike your usual burning reflux should not automatically be treated as heartburn.

Ways to reduce symptoms

Try smaller meals, eat slowly, and stay upright after food. Notice whether spicy, fatty, acidic, caffeinated, or fizzy items trigger symptoms for you, then reduce the specific triggers rather than restricting your diet unnecessarily. Avoid eating close to bedtime and raise your upper body for sleep rather than adding pillows only beneath your head.

If these measures are not enough, ask your maternity clinician or pharmacist which antacid or reflux medicine is suitable during pregnancy. Tell them about prenatal vitamins and every medicine or supplement you take because some products interact or contain ingredients that are unsuitable in pregnancy.

When to get medical help

Seek urgent assessment for severe or crushing chest pain, trouble breathing, faintness, sweating, pain spreading to the arm, jaw or back, vomiting blood, black stools, or severe upper abdominal pain. Contact your maternity unit promptly if upper abdominal pain occurs with a severe headache, vision changes, sudden swelling, or feeling markedly unwell.

Arrange a routine review if heartburn is frequent, wakes you repeatedly, makes swallowing difficult, causes ongoing vomiting, or does not improve with sensible self-care. A clinician can confirm the likely cause and recommend a pregnancy-appropriate treatment plan.

Questions for your clinician

Ask which over-the-counter products are compatible with your pregnancy and other medicines, how to space them from prenatal supplements, and whether symptoms warrant examination. It can help to describe where the discomfort starts, what brings it on, whether food or fluid comes back up, and which self-care measures you have tried.

Questions people ask

Can heartburn harm my baby at 33 weeks?

Heartburn does not directly harm the baby. However, contact your maternity clinician if it prevents you from eating, causes repeated vomiting, or is accompanied by concerning symptoms.

Can I take an antacid while pregnant?

Some antacids may be used during pregnancy, but the appropriate product depends on its ingredients and your other medicines. Check with a maternity clinician or pharmacist before taking one.

Why is heartburn worse when I lie down?

Gravity no longer helps keep stomach contents down when you lie flat, so reflux can reach the oesophagus more easily. Leaving time after eating and elevating your upper body may help.
