32-week growth scan: what to expect

You will usually lie on an examination couch with your abdomen exposed. The sonographer applies gel, moves an ultrasound probe over your skin and saves the views needed for measurements. You can ask for an explanation of what is being checked.

The examination commonly records dimensions of the baby's head and abdomen and the length of a thigh bone. These values are combined into an estimated size. The report may also describe fetal position, the amount of amniotic fluid and where the placenta lies.

Ultrasound size is an estimate, and one scan cannot show the pace of growth by itself. Comparison with previous or later measurements helps your clinician assess the trajectory. If a value differs from the expected pattern, the next step depends on all findings and your pregnancy history.

Read the clinic's preparation advice because bladder instructions are not the same everywhere. Clothing with a separate top and waistband can make access easier. Bring requested maternity documents and mention any new symptoms or change in your baby's usual movement pattern.

The sonographer may pause, adjust the probe angle or ask you to turn if the baby is in a position that makes a view difficult. Afterwards, ask who will discuss the written report. A follow-up plan might include another scan or other monitoring if the clinical team needs more information.

A noticeable reduction or change in fetal movements needs prompt maternity advice, even when your scan appointment is close. Use the contact route your maternity service provided rather than waiting to see whether the pattern returns.

Get urgent help for vaginal bleeding, fluid leaking from the vagina, severe or continuing abdominal pain, regular painful contractions, or a severe headache with visual disturbance or sudden swelling. A scan result does not rule out problems that develop afterwards.

Consider asking whether the measurements form a consistent pattern, whether fluid or placental findings alter your care, and when position will next be reviewed. If extra monitoring is offered, ask what concern it addresses and whom to contact if symptoms arise between visits.
