What to know about a 3D ultrasound at 31 weeks

The equipment builds a still, three-dimensional view from ultrasound information. A 4D display shows similar images in motion. These views may complement an examination, but they do not replace the standard measurements and anatomical views used for medical assessment.

The baby's position, hands near the face, the placenta, available amniotic fluid and the angle of the probe all affect the surface image. Later in pregnancy, less open space around the baby can make an unobstructed facial view difficult.

A blurred or incomplete 3D picture does not by itself indicate a health concern. Diagnostic interpretation comes from the complete ultrasound examination and the clinician's report, not from how recognisable a keepsake image appears.

Check whether the appointment is for clinical assessment, non-medical imaging, or both. If a growth review has been requested, make sure the service will perform the prescribed measurements and send a report to your maternity clinician.

Use a qualified ultrasound service and follow its preparation advice. During the visit, the operator may ask you to change position or pause while the baby moves, although a particular facial view still cannot be promised.

Call your maternity unit promptly for reduced or distinctly changed fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions or severe abdominal pain. Also obtain urgent advice for a severe headache with vision changes or sudden swelling accompanied by feeling unwell. A reassuring picture is not a medical check for these symptoms.

Ask whether there is a clinical reason for the ultrasound, which standard views or measurements will be recorded, and who will interpret the result. If an earlier scan raised a concern, ask whether the planned appointment is designed to reassess that specific finding.
