A small amount of blood may follow cervical irritation, including after sex or an examination. Bleeding can also accompany infection or a pregnancy complication, and appearance alone cannot confirm the source.

Clinicians distinguish a smear seen when wiping from a flow that marks or soaks a pad. Colour may range from brown, which can be older blood, to pink or red. They will also consider cramps, one-sided pain, clots or tissue, fluid leakage, fever, urinary symptoms, discharge, dizziness, and recent intercourse.

The cervix has a richer blood supply during pregnancy and may bleed more readily. However, neither light flow nor the absence of pain rules out a problem. Your pregnancy stage, scan findings, blood group, previous pregnancies, and medical history guide the appropriate assessment.

Contact your maternity unit, obstetric clinician, or urgent-care service promptly and follow its triage advice. Note when spotting started, its colour and amount, whether it is changing, and any associated symptoms. A pad can help you monitor the flow; do not insert anything into the vagina while bleeding unless a clinician advises it.

Have your pregnancy and blood-group information available if known. The care team may recommend an examination, ultrasound, or blood tests depending on the history. Avoid taking anti-inflammatory pain medicines or changing prescribed treatment without advice; ask which pain relief is suitable in pregnancy.

Go to emergency care for heavy or rapidly increasing bleeding, severe abdominal or pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, weakness, breathing difficulty, fever, confusion, or feeling acutely unwell. Arrange emergency transport rather than driving if you might faint.

Urgency comes from these symptoms and the amount or progression of bleeding, not from guessing the cause. Seek reassessment if spotting returns, becomes redder or heavier, or new pain develops, even after earlier reassurance.

Ask what assessment is appropriate now, whether your blood group affects treatment, and which changes should bring you directly to emergency care. If an infection is possible, ask which samples are needed and whether a partner also requires testing or treatment.
