Three days after embryo transfer: what to expect

Feeling completely normal can be expected, while mild cramping, bloating, breast tenderness or light spotting may occur. These changes can come from the transfer procedure, recent egg collection or hormone medicines and do not confirm the outcome.

At this early point, the embryo is inside the uterus, but there is no useful home observation that can tell you whether it has implanted. Ordinary movements such as walking, using the toilet, coughing or climbing stairs do not make an embryo fall out.

Symptoms vary between people and between treatment cycles. Progesterone can cause tiredness, breast soreness, bloating or changes in vaginal discharge, which overlap with early pregnancy sensations. Having symptoms, losing them or having none does not provide a dependable answer.

Take every prescribed medicine at the dose and time on your clinic instructions. Do not stop progesterone because of spotting or because you feel no pregnancy symptoms unless your fertility team tells you to stop. If a dose is late or missed, contact the clinic or pharmacist for advice specific to that medicine rather than doubling it yourself.

Normal gentle daily activity is generally reasonable. Follow any personalised limits your clinic gave you about exercise, sex, bathing, travel or work, especially if egg collection was recent or you are still uncomfortable. Eat and drink normally unless your care team advised otherwise.

Use the pregnancy test on the date and in the way your clinic specified. Testing early can give a misleading result because treatment medicines or hormone levels may affect what the test detects.

Contact your fertility clinic promptly for heavy bleeding, worsening abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, marked abdominal swelling, fever, feeling faint, reduced urination or feeling seriously unwell. These symptoms need assessment rather than interpretation as signs of implantation.

Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing, chest or upper-back pain, coughing blood, fainting, severe one-sided lower abdominal pain or shoulder-tip pain. Use the emergency service where you are and do not drive yourself if you feel faint or acutely unwell.

Confirm the exact pregnancy-test date, who to call outside clinic hours and what to do if you miss a medicine dose. You can also ask which activities apply to your particular cycle, how long to continue progesterone and whether spotting changes any part of your plan.
