What should you know about 29 weeks pregnant heartburn?

Short answer
Heartburn at 29 weeks is often related to pregnancy changes, but severe or unusual pain needs prompt assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical feeling
- Burning behind the breastbone, sour taste, or regurgitation
- Common triggers
- Large meals, lying down after eating, and personal food triggers

The short answer
A burning feeling behind the breastbone, a sour taste, or food coming back toward the throat can fit heartburn. Symptoms may be more noticeable after eating, when bending, or when lying down.
Why it can happen now
Pregnancy hormones can relax the muscular valve between the stomach and oesophagus. As the uterus grows, pressure around the stomach can also make it easier for acidic contents to move upward. This pattern is called acid reflux; heartburn describes the burning symptom it can cause.
Heartburn itself does not usually harm the baby. However, chest or upper-abdominal discomfort should not automatically be labelled as reflux when it feels different from your usual symptoms or occurs with other warning signs.
Ways to reduce discomfort
Try smaller meals, eat slowly, and notice whether rich, spicy, acidic, or caffeinated foods trigger symptoms for you. Stay upright after eating and avoid a large meal close to bedtime. Raising your head and shoulders for sleep may reduce reflux at night.
Before using an antacid, alginate, herbal remedy, or other reflux medicine, check that it is appropriate in pregnancy with a pharmacist, midwife, or doctor. Tell them about vitamins, iron, and prescribed medicines because timing and ingredients can matter. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice.
When to seek medical care
Contact your maternity team promptly if the burning does not settle with measures that normally help, or if you have pain beneath the ribs, a severe headache, vision changes, sudden swelling, vomiting that prevents fluids staying down, difficulty swallowing, black stools, or blood in vomit.
Seek emergency help for crushing or severe chest pain, breathlessness, fainting, sweating, or pain spreading to the arm, back, neck, or jaw. Also contact maternity care urgently for reduced baby movements, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, or regular painful tightenings.
Useful questions for your maternity clinician
Ask which non-prescription option is suitable with your current medicines, how to space it from iron or prenatal supplements, and what symptom pattern should trigger a same-day call. If symptoms are frequent, ask whether a regular treatment plan is preferable to repeated occasional dosing.

Questions people ask
Can I take heartburn medicine while pregnant?
Some reflux medicines can be used during pregnancy, but the right product depends on its ingredients, your health, and other medicines or supplements. Check with a pharmacist, midwife, or doctor before taking it.
Does heartburn mean something is wrong with my baby?
Heartburn commonly reflects digestive changes during pregnancy and does not by itself indicate a problem with the baby. New severe pain or symptoms such as reduced movements, bleeding, or vision changes need prompt maternity advice.
