What to know about a growth scan at 26 weeks

The scan can help monitor a known concern or provide another point in a sequence of measurements. Its meaning comes from the combined findings, not from one number viewed in isolation.

Measurements usually include the baby's head, abdominal area and thigh bone. These feed into an estimated size and are compared with the pregnancy stage and any previous measurements. Clinicians also look at body proportions because different measurement patterns can lead to different follow-up decisions.

The sonographer reviews amniotic fluid and placenta as relevant to the request. Doppler may be used to assess blood-flow patterns when there is a clinical reason. If the estimate or another feature needs monitoring, the next step may be a repeat scan, an antenatal review or additional surveillance rather than an immediate conclusion.

Check the unit's instructions before attending and carry your maternity record plus earlier reports. Tell the team about bleeding, pain, fluid loss, headaches, visual symptoms or a change in movement, as symptoms may require a separate clinical assessment. The abdominal examination usually involves gel and steady probe pressure to capture precise views.

Ask for the overall interpretation rather than trying to compare individual figures yourself. Note the recommended timing and purpose of any follow-up. If your clinician changes monitoring, medication or appointment frequency, make sure you know which service is coordinating the plan and how to reach it.

Contact the maternity unit without delay for reduced or clearly changed fetal movements, vaginal bleeding, possible waters breaking, persistent pain, fever, or a severe headache accompanied by vision changes. Emergency help is appropriate for heavy bleeding, collapse, seizure, serious breathing difficulty or sudden severe pain. Attend based on the symptom advice you receive rather than waiting to discuss it at the growth scan.

Consider asking: Do the measurements show a consistent pattern? How do they compare with the earlier examination? Were the placenta, fluid and any requested blood-flow checks satisfactory? What specific issue would the next appointment monitor, and which symptoms should bring that review forward?
