What to know about an HD ultrasound at 25 weeks

The term commonly describes software that adds lighting, shadow and depth effects to three-dimensional ultrasound data. It is a style of image presentation, not a separate test that can confirm the baby's health on its own.

Rendered images can make the contours of the face, limbs or hands easier to recognise. Results depend on the baby's direction, movement, tissue between the probe and baby, placenta position and fluid around the area being viewed. A blurred or partly hidden face is therefore not itself a medical finding.

Clinical ultrasound interpretation comes from standard moving views and measurements. If the appointment also includes a growth or targeted assessment, the clinician may examine the head, abdomen, thigh bone, fluid and placenta, or revisit anatomy that previously needed clarification. Confirm what type of examination has actually been booked.

Check whether the service provides a clinical report and whether a qualified clinician reviews the diagnostic images. Follow its specific preparation advice, bring earlier ultrasound results, and disclose any current pregnancy symptoms before imaging begins. The sonographer may pause or reposition the probe while waiting for the baby to move.

Read the clinical conclusion separately from the rendered photographs. When recommended views are incomplete, ask whether they need repeating and in what setting. Do not use a keepsake image session as a reason to delay scheduled antenatal monitoring or a medically requested scan.

Seek prompt maternity advice for vaginal bleeding, fluid leaking from the vagina, fever, ongoing abdominal pain, severe headache with vision changes, or a clear reduction or alteration in the baby's usual movements. Call emergency services for collapse, a seizure, heavy bleeding, marked breathing difficulty or severe escalating pain. Image appearance cannot determine whether these symptoms are safe to monitor at home.

Ask whether the session includes diagnostic two-dimensional views, which clinical questions it is intended to answer, who interprets the findings and when you will receive a report. If a view is limited, ask whether this affects the medical assessment or only the optional rendered picture.
