What to know about a growth scan at 24 weeks

It may be arranged because of an earlier finding, a maternal health factor, uncertainty about pregnancy dates or a need to monitor growth. The reason for your scan determines which details receive particular attention.

The sonographer measures parts of the baby's head, abdomen and thigh bone. Ultrasound software combines those measurements to estimate size, while the clinician also considers proportions, amniotic fluid, placenta and the pattern seen on previous scans. An estimate is not the same as weighing the baby directly.

A single measurement provides a snapshot. Change over time can give more context, so a repeat scan may be recommended even when no immediate treatment is needed. Blood-flow assessment with Doppler may be added when clinically appropriate. Your report should explain whether the findings fit the expected pattern and what monitoring is planned.

Use the preparation instructions from your ultrasound unit, since bladder guidance differs between services. Take your maternity notes and prior scan reports, and mention medicines, blood-pressure concerns or changes in symptoms. During the scan, you may be asked to turn so the sonographer can obtain a suitable angle.

Before leaving, clarify whether the clinician wants routine antenatal care, another growth assessment or an earlier review. Keep scheduled appointments because comparison between scans can matter more than an isolated estimate. Continue following your maternity team's advice on fetal movement awareness.

Call your maternity service promptly if you have bleeding, suspected leaking fluid, severe headache with visual disturbance, fever, persistent abdominal pain, or movements that are reduced or notably different once you recognise a pattern. Heavy bleeding, collapse, a seizure, severe breathing difficulty or rapidly intensifying pain needs emergency assessment. A reassuring earlier scan does not rule out a new pregnancy problem.

Ask which measurements were taken, whether they are proportionate, how the estimate compares with earlier scans, and whether fluid or placental findings alter the plan. If follow-up is advised, ask when it should occur, whether Doppler assessment is expected and whom to contact if symptoms change beforehand.
