What happens 24 hours after your waters break

Once the amniotic sac has opened, the barrier between the uterus and vaginal bacteria is reduced. The team will consider your stage of pregnancy, labour signs, fluid appearance, temperature, the baby's movements and heartbeat, and any infection concerns.

Waters may break as a gush or a continuing trickle, and contractions may begin before or afterwards. As time passes after membrane rupture, clinicians pay closer attention to signs of infection in you or the baby. This does not mean infection is present; it means assessment and a clear plan are needed.

If this happens before the pregnancy has reached term, management also considers prematurity. Preterm labour can present with membrane rupture, regular tightenings, pelvic pressure or backache, but only a maternity assessment can establish what is happening.

Call the maternity unit even if you feel well or contractions have not started. Note when leaking began, the fluid's colour and smell, whether it continues, your baby's movement pattern and any contractions. Wear a clean sanitary pad so the team can assess the fluid; do not use a tampon or insert anything into the vagina.

Follow the unit's instructions about where and when to attend. Avoid intercourse while awaiting advice. If you are unsure whether the fluid is urine, discharge or amniotic fluid, still describe what happened and let the maternity team decide whether examination is needed.

Seek urgent maternity assessment for green, brown, bloody or foul-smelling fluid; fever or chills; feeling suddenly unwell; worsening abdominal or uterine tenderness; heavy bleeding; or reduced baby movements. Call emergency services for collapse, severe breathing difficulty, uncontrollable bleeding, an urge to push, or if you can see or feel the umbilical cord or part of the baby.

Ask how membrane rupture will be confirmed, how you and the baby will be monitored, and what changes would alter the timing or place of birth. You can also ask whether medicines are recommended, what each is intended to do, and whom to contact if symptoms change after you leave the unit.
