What should you know about a 2-month-old coughing and sneezing?

Young infants have narrow nasal passages and often sneeze to move mucus or irritants. A cough can accompany a common cold, yet the baby's breathing effort, feeding, alertness, and wet nappies are more useful guides to urgency than the sound of the cough alone.

The common cold often presents with a blocked or runny nose, sneezing, and cough. Dry air, smoke, fragrances, or milk reaching the back of the throat may also trigger brief coughing or sneezing. Allergic rhinitis can present with repeated sneezing and clear nasal discharge, although infection and irritation also deserve consideration in an infant this young.

Notice whether symptoms occur around feeds, whether anyone nearby is unwell, and whether there is wheezing, a barking sound, or pauses in breathing. This pattern helps a clinician assess the cause without assuming that one symptom identifies a particular condition.

Keep the baby away from smoke, incense, aerosols, and strong scents. Saline nose drops and gentle suction before feeds can ease nasal blockage. Offer usual breast or bottle feeds more frequently if congestion makes longer feeds tiring, and keep track of wet nappies.

Place the baby flat on their back on a firm sleep surface with the sleep space clear. Do not prop the mattress, use steam near the baby, or give cough, cold, decongestant, or allergy medicine unless a clinician has specifically prescribed it for this infant.

Seek emergency help if the baby's lips or face look blue or grey, breathing stops or has repeated pauses, the baby is very difficult to wake, or there is severe breathing effort. Grunting, nostril flaring, ribs pulling in, or being too breathless to feed also require urgent assessment.

Contact a clinician promptly for any measured fever in a baby younger than three months, clearly fewer wet nappies, repeated vomiting, worsening cough, or feeding much less than usual. A young infant can become unwell quickly even when symptoms began mildly.

Be ready to describe when the cough began, its sound, feeding changes, wet nappies, temperature readings, sick contacts, and possible smoke or fragrance exposure. Ask the clinician to show you which breathing signs to watch and how to use saline and suction safely.
