Bleeding for two days in early pregnancy

Contact your maternity service, early pregnancy unit or obstetric clinician for guidance. The colour and amount of blood can help describe the episode, but neither can confirm that the pregnancy is progressing normally or identify a pregnancy loss.

Bleeding can come from the cervix or vagina, including after sex or an examination. It can also occur with changes inside the uterus or with a pregnancy that is not developing as expected. Ectopic pregnancy can present with vaginal bleeding and pain, although symptoms vary and early symptoms may be subtle.

A clinician interprets the bleeding alongside your pregnancy dates, pain, previous pregnancies and examination findings. Depending on the situation, assessment may include an ultrasound and blood tests; sometimes follow-up is needed before the pregnancy's location or development becomes clear.

Wear a pad rather than a tampon so you can observe the bleeding. Note whether it is spotting or a flow, whether there are clots or tissue, and where any pain is located. Keep details of your last menstrual period and any previous ultrasound available.

Take only medicines that your pregnancy care team has said are suitable, and do not stop prescribed pregnancy support without instructions. If your blood group is known, share it with the clinician because it may affect the care offered after bleeding.

Go for urgent assessment now if bleeding is heavy, pain is severe or worsening, pain is mainly on one side, or you have shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, weakness or breathing difficulty. These symptoms can signal internal bleeding or another emergency.

Call emergency services if you may collapse, cannot travel safely or feel acutely unwell. Do not wait for a routine appointment when red-flag symptoms are present, even if the visible vaginal bleeding seems light.

Ask where and when you should be assessed, whether an ultrasound or blood tests are appropriate, and what changes should bring you back urgently. Confirm whether any prescribed medicines should continue and how you will receive follow-up results. If the pregnancy location is not yet clear, ask for the specific follow-up plan.
