Spotting When You Wipe at 14 Weeks Pregnant

Pink, red, or brown marks on toilet paper count as spotting. During pregnancy, the cervix has a richer blood supply and may bleed after sex or an examination. Infection, a small leak of blood from inside the womb, miscarriage, or a placental problem can also cause bleeding. Colour alone cannot identify the cause, and sometimes an assessment finds no serious problem.

The maternity clinician may ask about pain, discharge, recent sex, urinary symptoms, and whether the flow is increasing. Depending on the situation, assessment can include an examination, urine or blood tests, and an ultrasound scan.

Contact your maternity unit, obstetrician, or an urgent pregnancy service today for individual advice, even if the spotting has stopped. Use a sanitary pad rather than a tampon so you can observe the amount. Note the colour, whether there are clots or fluid, when it began, and any cramps, fever, dizziness, or pain when passing urine.

Tell the clinician your blood group if you know it, especially if you are Rh-negative, because bleeding can affect whether additional treatment is considered. Avoid taking a new medicine for pain or bleeding unless a clinician or pharmacist confirms it is suitable during pregnancy.

Go to the nearest emergency department or call local emergency services if bleeding becomes heavy, pain is severe, you have shoulder pain, or you feel faint, dizzy, confused, or very unwell. Prompt assessment is also needed for passing tissue, fever, a gush or ongoing leak of fluid, or worsening cramps. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint.

Ask whether you need an examination or scan, what changes should trigger emergency care, and whether your blood group changes the plan. You can also ask if pelvic rest is appropriate and whom to contact if the spotting returns outside clinic hours.
