Pregnancy symptoms may continue for a while because hormone levels do not fall immediately. The absence of bleeding is part of why the finding can be unexpected, and it does not mean that you caused the loss.

The clinician interprets the ultrasound findings in the context of previous scans and pregnancy dates. If there is uncertainty, another assessment may be recommended before treatment. Once confirmed, the usual approaches are waiting for the pregnancy tissue to pass, using medicine to help the uterus empty, or having a procedure.

The suitable choice depends on your symptoms, scan findings, medical history and preferences. Waiting avoids medicine and a procedure but its timing is unpredictable. Medicine gives more control over timing but brings cramping and bleeding. A procedure is planned and usually quicker, while still carrying anaesthetic and surgical considerations.

Discuss each option with the early-pregnancy team and ask what pain relief, follow-up and emergency contact arrangements will apply. If managing the loss outside hospital, have pads, prescribed pain relief, fluids and a trusted support person available. Use pads rather than judging blood loss only from the toilet.

Emotional responses vary and may include numbness, sadness, anger or relief that uncertainty has ended. Give yourself space to recover, and request bereavement or mental-health support if distress is persistent, overwhelming or interfering with daily life.

Seek urgent assessment for very heavy bleeding, fainting, severe or worsening abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fever, offensive-smelling discharge, breathing difficulty or feeling acutely unwell. Contact the treating service if bleeding or pain is not following the pattern they described, or if you are unsure whether the pregnancy tissue has passed.
