Missed miscarriage concerns at 10 weeks pregnant

A missed miscarriage means that a pregnancy has stopped developing but the body has not yet passed the pregnancy tissue. Some people still feel pregnant, while others notice that nausea or breast tenderness has eased. Either pattern can also occur in an ongoing pregnancy, so symptoms do not provide a diagnosis.

An ultrasound checks the pregnancy's location, development and heartbeat. The clinician interprets the scan using the pregnancy measurements and the timing information available. If dates are uncertain or the findings are not conclusive, another scan may be arranged before any treatment decision is made.

Having few symptoms at 10 weeks does not by itself show that something is wrong. Likewise, light spotting or mild cramping may have several causes. A clinical assessment is the appropriate way to separate normal changes from pregnancy loss or another problem.

Contact your maternity team or gynaecology service if you are worried, especially if you have bleeding, pain or a sudden change that concerns you. Keep any planned scan appointment and note the first day of your last period, previous scan results, bleeding pattern and pain location.

If a missed miscarriage is confirmed, options may include waiting for the tissue to pass naturally, medicines to help the uterus empty, or a procedure to remove the tissue. Your symptoms, preferences and clinical findings help guide the choice. Pregnancy loss is not caused by ordinary movement, work or something you thought or felt.

Seek urgent medical care for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, fever, chills, or feeling acutely unwell. These features need prompt assessment because they can accompany significant blood loss, infection or an ectopic pregnancy.

Use emergency services if you collapse, have trouble staying awake or feel too unwell to travel safely. Do not wait for a routine appointment when symptoms are severe or worsening.

You might ask whether the scan is conclusive, whether a repeat scan is needed, what each management option involves, what pain relief is suitable, and whom to contact if bleeding or pain increases. Also ask what follow-up will confirm that treatment or expectant management is complete.
