Itchy skin at 10 weeks pregnant: what to know

Pregnancy can make skin more reactive, while fragranced products, heat, sweating, eczema, hives, contact reactions, or an infection may also cause itching. The location, appearance of any rash, timing, and accompanying symptoms help narrow the cause.

Dry or irritated skin may feel tight or flaky and can worsen after hot showers. Contact dermatitis often presents with an itchy rash where a product, fabric, or metal touched the skin. Atopic dermatitis commonly presents with itchy, inflamed patches, while urticaria presents with raised welts that can move from place to place.

Itching without a visible rash, especially if intense or involving the palms or soles, deserves prompt discussion with your maternity clinician. A clinician may need to assess causes beyond the skin rather than assuming the symptom is a routine pregnancy change.

Use lukewarm water, pat the skin dry, and apply a plain fragrance-free moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp. Wear loose, breathable clothing, keep cool, and pause any recently introduced scented wash, lotion, oil, or laundry product.

Avoid scratching where possible; a cool compress can settle the urge. Check with a pharmacist, maternity clinician, or doctor before using medicated creams or oral antihistamines during pregnancy, because suitability depends on the ingredient, body area, and your health history.

Contact your maternity team promptly for intense itching without a rash, itching on the palms or soles, yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, pale stools, or feeling generally unwell. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or a rapidly spreading blistering rash.

Arrange a routine assessment if the itch persists, disturbs sleep, spreads, or comes with broken, weeping, crusted, painful, or infected-looking skin. Take note of new products, medicines, foods, and where the symptoms started to help the clinician assess the pattern.

Ask whether the pattern fits dryness, eczema, a contact reaction, hives, infection, or a pregnancy-related cause; whether examination or blood tests are appropriate; and which moisturisers or medicines are suitable at this stage of pregnancy.
